This page is designed to point people at who ask me about IRC operator related stuff. Don't take offense by being directed at this page, I get asked all kinds of crazy questions, usually several times a day. So, this is my page where you can read my nice long verbose answer.
In all honesty, the easiest way to become an IRC operator is to link a server to Undernet. You'll need a beefy server, and a snotload of bandwidth and a lot of time. See Routing-com's webpage for more information.
You can't link a server? Well, plan B is to know a server admin. personally. As in, you've met them in person and they know where you live. Yep, pretty much all IRC operators are people that are known by the server admin in real life.
You live in a far off country where there are no server admins handy? Hmm, perhaps you could try the approach of helping out for a couple of years and maybe someone will notice you. No assurances tho. And it will be at least 2 years of hard work before anyone will consider you, if not more.
Yeah, I'm an admin, but I don't own a server to add them to, so I can't add any opers. So no, I can't. Sorry.
The people that deal with linking a server are Routing-com. I'm not a member of that committee, and in fact, I don't regularly talk to anyone who's ON that committee. So yeah, I'm not much help.

Nope. I'm level 1000 because I'm a coder. Level 1000 access in X lets me debug bugs in X and fix things when they go wrong. I don't get a say in who's added to cservice, who registered your channel, who unregistered your channel, or whatever. I just curse at X whenever it crashes.
So talk to someone in Cservice, I can't register channels/fix usernames/ purge channels

I'm possibly not there, I'm asleep (see above), or you've not caught my attention. Try again later. Explain why I should talk to you, I do listen to almost every privmsg I get, but I don't always respond. A short sentance describing why you want to talk is good. Explain what you want to talk about. "Are you there?" won't get an answer. I'm not fussy about good grammer or spelling, but please at least try to make sure what your saying makes sense. I'm also not a big fan of leet speak, or txt speak or whatever. People who use "plz" especially irritate me. Avoid it. If you can't be bothered to write a full word, then why should I bother to reply? If you want to talk, use english, I don't speak french, romanian, german, or klingon.

I don't exist on Undernet to talk to every person that has a problem. There are 100,000 people on Undernet at any one time, and it often feels like they all want to talk to me today. If you don't know me, it's rare you'll get a reply even if you follow all of these rules. If you want to talk to an oper go ask in #zt, or #nastrad or something.
Pasting old stolen information is a good way to piss me off and put you on my "never talk to again" list. If you were a good researcher you'd have found this page and would have realised that that kind of thing isn't going to work.
Telling me you want to be friends before I've said one word. Well gee, perhaps I'm some kind of freak (well, no perhaps about it...). You just want to use me to show how great you are and how you know lots of opers. Well gee, you can go bugger off right now. I don't have time to play bestest buddies with every tom, dick and harry on undernet. Go find someone else to be friendly with.
The best things you can talk to me about are bugs. Bugs in X, bugs in ircu, bugs in whatever. That works well. Feature requests are good too. Almost anything to do with programming, or Linux. Undernet not doing things you'd expect works well especially if you can demonstrate it.
Things that are in this FAQ, especially how to become an IRC operator, a CService helper or how to link an IRC server. I don't like talking about personal things, Windows tech support is also something I don't do on IRC.
If you have to ask then no. I'm a coder. I fix bugs. There are lots of IRC operators that love to help out people by sorting out who should be op'd on a channel and opping them. Anyway, C should automatically op you now days
In general no. I'll gline someone if they are causing harm to the network (causing servers to split etc), but normally, thats fairly noticible. Otherwise, see the comment above about opping people

I'm male in my late 20s. I live in New Zealand. I hate people who call me by my real name on IRC, so if you're smart enough to find it from a google search, good for you, but it irritates me so don't use it. On IRC I'm "Isomer". I love to code, I code for a living, then I come home and code for fun, I then goto sleep and dream about coding. I sometimes code for undernet.
